What Not To Eat Before Your Plastic Surgery (Especially in Vietnam): Real case study

|Tips,Vietnam Medical Tourism|What Not To Eat Before Your Plastic Surgery (Especially in Vietnam): Real case study

If you’re flying overseas for plastic surgery, especially to Vietnam, what you eat and drink in the days before your operation can literally determine whether your surgery goes ahead or gets cancelled.

For medical travelers, food safety isn’t just about comfort, it’s a surgical safety issue.

Why does food matter before surgery?

What you eat in the days leading up to surgery plays a major role in your safety and your surgical outcome.

Before anesthesia, your stomach and digestive system need to be as calm and empty as possible. But there’s another critical reason: bacteria.

what you should not eat before surgery

Food poisoning isn’t just an upset stomach, it means harmful bacteria or toxins have entered your body. Under these conditions, your body is not safe for surgery.

Operating when there is an active bacterial infection can significantly increase the risk of:

  • Surgical site infection
  • Slower or poor healing
  • Complications under anesthesia
  • Serious systemic infection (in severe cases)

For these reasons, anesthesiologists will often cancel or postpone surgery if you show any signs of food poisoning, even mild ones.

Why traveling increases your risk?

When you’re in a new country, your body is exposed to different bacteria in local food, produce, water, and ice.

Even one unsafe meal such as raw seafood, salads washed in tap water, or drinks with ice can lead to gastrointestinal infection right before your surgery.

This is why we always advise patients to avoid:

  • Raw or undercooked seafood
  • Tap water and ice
  • Uncooked vegetables and salads
  • Street food
  • Any food your stomach isn’t used to

Even one unsafe meal can lead to gastrointestinal infection right before your surgery.

A Real Example: How One Meal Nearly Cost a Patient Her Procedure

With COS MEDCONNECT, patients are always reminded to avoid certain foods in the days leading up to surgery: no raw seafood, no ice, no uncooked vegetables, no salads, and no tap water.

Despite this, we recently supported a client who chose to eat raw seafood shortly after arriving. Within 24 hours, she developed severe food poisoning and needed hospital treatment.

Because she was not medically fit for anesthesia, her surgery had to be cancelled. With her travel dates fixed, she had no choice but to return home without the procedure, resulting in additional future costs, extra time off work, and significant emotional stress.

This is the reality most people don’t see on Social Media. It’s not just about the final results it’s about understanding that your body is preparing for major surgery in a foreign country and needs the safest possible conditions.

What not to eat before your plastic surgery in Vietnam

If your surgery is in Vietnam, be especially careful with local dishes and drinking water. Based on common food poisoning risks and local cuisine features, these are the main foods to avoid:

What not to eat before your plastic surgery in Vietnam

  • Raw shrimp, raw oysters, raw clams, sashimi, fish salad (raw or undercooked seafood carries high risk of bacterial and parasitic infections).
  • Tiết canh (raw blood pudding) (extremely risky for serious infection).
  • Nem chua (fermented raw pork) (may harbor bacteria or parasites).
  • Rare beef, rare beef pho from untrusted vendors (undercooked beef dishes can contain parasites or bacteria).
  • Iced drinks, sugarcane juice with ice, iced tea (ice and drinks made with tap water can cause traveler’s diarrhea).
  • Various types of salad, raw herbs, and raw vegetables (often washed with unsafe water, leading to contamination).
  • Street food that has been sitting out or is not freshly cooked and served hot.

Only eat thoroughly cooked dishes, drink sealed bottled water, and avoid raw or unwashed items to prevent infections that could delay or cancel your surgery.

Here are some foods that are generally safe and well-tolerated before surgery:

Cooked Carbohydrates: Thoroughly cooked rice dishes such as cơm trắng (plain rice) or cơm tấm (broken rice). These are simple, safe, and gentle on the stomach.

Well-cooked Vegetables: Steamed or boiled options like spinach, carrots, pumpkin, or broccoli. Cooking eliminates most bacteria and makes them easy to digest.

Lean, Fully Cooked Proteins: Well-cooked chicken, fish (never raw), eggs, or tofu. Protein supports strength and healing.

Simple, Comforting Soups: Phở chín (well-done beef pho) or light vegetable broths (canh). These provide hydration and are easy on digestion.

Safe Fruits: Fruits that can be peeled or washed with bottled water, such as bananas, mangoes, or papayas.  They provide vitamins without unnecessary risk.

Safe Hydration: Sealed bottled water or boiled water, never tap water or drinks with ice.

More general pre-surgery food advice

1. Avoid raw food (especially seafood and meat)

Raw seafood like prawns, oysters, sashimi, ceviche, or raw or undercooked meats can harbor harmful bacteria and parasites. A foodborne illness just before surgery can cause nausea, vomiting, dehydration, and cancellation.

2. Avoid tap water and ice cubes

Many surgery destinations have water quality not suitable for travelers. Drinking tap water or ice made from it can cause stomach infections.

3. Stay away from uncooked vegetables and salads

If washed in unsafe water or handled poorly, these can carry bacteria or parasites.

4. Skip heavy, fatty, or spicy meals close to surgery

They slow digestion and increase nausea and reflux risk during anesthesia.

5. Avoid alcohol before surgery

It weakens immunity, increases bleeding risk, and causes dehydration.

When to contact your surgeon?

If before surgery you develop vomiting, diarrhea, fever, dehydration signs, or severe cramps, contact your clinic immediately. Proceeding with surgery while sick puts your health at serious risk.

Your surgery is not worth a risky meal. Avoid raw seafood, tap water, street salads, and risky local foods to arrive healthy and ready for your procedure.
