6 Types of Tummy Tuck: Which One Is Right For You?

|Tummy Tuck|6 Types of Tummy Tuck: Which One Is Right For You?

If you’ve been researching tummy tucks, you’ve probably come across mini, full, and extended options without much guidance on which applies to you. The difference isn’t just about size. It’s about where your excess skin sits and what your abdominal muscles need.

Here’s what each type involves and how they differ.

Summary

Mini tummy tucks address the lower abdomen only. Full tummy tucks cover upper and lower, with belly button repositioning. Extended adds the flanks. Your anatomy determines which type suits you, not personal preference.

What’s the Difference Between a Mini, Full, and Extended Tummy Tuck?

Tummy Tuck Types

The three types address different areas of the abdomen. Here’s a quick comparison:

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck addresses the lower abdomen only, from the belly button down to the pubic area. It is the least extensive of the three types.

What it treats: A mini tummy tuck addresses mild excess skin in the lower abdomen, below the belly button. It is not suited to patients with laxity above the navel.

Incision and scar: The incision is short and horizontal, sitting low enough to remain hidden beneath underwear or swimwear. It is noticeably shorter than a full tummy tuck scar.

Belly button: The belly button is not repositioned. The surgery stays below it.

Muscle repair: Muscle repair is limited or not required, depending on your anatomy.

Recovery: Most patients return to desk work within approximately 2 weeks. Light activity resumes around 3-4 weeks.

Mini tummy tuck candidates are less common than people expect. If you have skin laxity above the navel, your surgeon will likely recommend a full tummy tuck instead.

Full Tummy Tuck

A full tummy tuck, also called a standard abdominoplasty, is the most common type. It addresses both the upper and lower abdomen.

What it treats: A full tummy tuck addresses excess skin above and below the navel, and may repair muscle separation (diastasis recti). It is the most common choice after pregnancy or significant weight loss.

Incision and scar: The incision runs hip to hip, just above the pubic area. A second incision around the belly button allows it to be repositioned.

Belly button: The belly button is repositioned to sit naturally on the new abdominal contour.

Muscle repair: The surgeon repairs the abdominal muscles along the full length of the midline. This is what flattens the abdominal wall and addresses diastasis recti.

Recovery: Most patients return to light activity within 1-2 weeks and strenuous exercise from approximately 6-8 weeks. Final contour settles over 6-12 months. Individual recovery varies.

If you’ve had a full-term pregnancy or lost a significant amount of weight, this is most likely the type your surgeon will recommend.

Extended Tummy Tuck

An extended tummy tuck follows the same approach as a full procedure, but goes further. It suits patients whose excess skin extends beyond the abdomen into the flanks and hips.

What it treats: An extended tummy tuck addresses excess skin on the abdomen and the sides of the body. It is most commonly recommended after major weight loss.

Incision and scar: The incision runs hip to hip and extends further around the sides of the body. It is longer than a full tummy tuck scar.

Belly button: The belly button is repositioned, the same as a full tummy tuck.

Muscle repair: Full muscle repair is performed along the midline, the same as a full tummy tuck.

Recovery: Most patients need approximately 8-12 weeks before returning to strenuous activity. Swelling can persist for several months. Individual recovery varies significantly.

If your skin laxity extends around your flanks when you sit or move, your surgeon may recommend an extended procedure over a full tummy tuck.

Before deciding on a type, it’s worth confirming you’re a suitable candidate for the procedure. There are specific health and lifestyle factors surgeons assess before recommending any abdominoplasty. See the full criteria in our guide on who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck.

What About Other Types: Fleur-de-Lis, Circumferential, and Reverse?

Three less common variations exist for specific situations.

A Fleur-de-Lis tummy tuck adds a vertical incision down the centre of the abdomen, forming a T-shape. It removes skin both horizontally and vertically and is typically used after extreme weight loss, where a horizontal incision alone is not sufficient.

A circumferential tummy tuck (also called a belt lipectomy or lower body lift) extends all the way around the torso, addressing the abdomen, flanks, lower back, and upper buttocks. It is a major procedure reserved for patients who have lost a very large amount of weight.

A reverse tummy tuck targets the upper abdomen via incisions under the breasts. It is rare and is usually combined with breast surgery when indicated.

These are not the primary focus of COS MEDCONNECT’s services, but our surgeons can advise whether any of these approaches may be relevant during your consultation.

How Does Your Surgeon Decide Which Type You Need?

The type of tummy tuck your surgeon recommends is based on clinical assessment, not patient preference. Key factors include how much skin you have and where it sits, whether your abdominal muscles are separated, whether excess skin extends to the flanks, your overall health and body mass index, and your surgical history.

A surgeon may recommend one type over another after examining skin laxity, muscle condition, and the extent of changes around your torso.

How Long Is Recovery for Each Type?

Recovery varies significantly. A mini tummy tuck generally involves around 2-4 weeks before returning to light activity. A full tummy tuck involves 6-8 weeks of activity restrictions, with final results visible over 3-6 months. An extended tummy tuck requires 8-12 weeks, with final results taking up to 6-12 months to fully settle.

All types involve post-operative drains, compression garments, and restrictions on lifting and strenuous activity. Swelling takes several months to fully resolve. Individual recovery experiences vary.

FAQ

Is a mini tummy tuck right for me if I’ve had a C-section?

It depends on whether your skin laxity extends above the navel. Your surgeon will assess this during consultation.

Can a tummy tuck fix diastasis recti?

A full or extended tummy tuck includes muscle repair that may address diastasis recti. A mini tummy tuck offers limited or no muscle repair.

How much does a tummy tuck cost in Vietnam?

Costs depend on the procedure type and your surgical plan. See our tummy tuck cost guide or request a personalised quote through your assessment.

Can I combine a tummy tuck with liposuction?

Combinations may be possible where medically appropriate. Your surgeon will assess your goals and recovery capacity before recommending any combined approach.
